I mean I am in the middle of reading watchmen and I wanted to get into comics, but the sheer number of them out there is a little overwhelming. So, where should I begin.

I mostly read DC comics and that universe is so intertwined at times it can be confusing if you’re trying to get into it. Like when I started I didn’t know what the heck was happening but you can get info on Wikipedia or ask people at the comic shop.
But I say just jump right in. If you start at the beginning of a story arc it’ll probably be better. On the publishers’ sites they usually have the schedules of what’s coming out and if it’s a new arc.
Some series have “one shots”or “mini series” which are single or multi-issue stories and don’t have to do with overall universe continuity. So that said, I’d highly recommend Batman: Cacaphony. It’s only a 3 issue mini series written by Kevin Smith. The first issue just came out this past week and you don’t have to know much about the characters. Then take it from there.

Try something like XMen. Just pick a series, since most of them aren’t related it doesn’t really matter where you start.
I’m going to recommend Astonishing XMen. Or Ultimate XMen (probably not a good idea to read them both at once because you’ll mix them up)
